The company was started in Sheboygan, Wisconsin as “Limousine Services” by Brian Dunn with a single van and his personal auto to transport passengers between the Sheboygan/Kohler area and General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, WI. (MKE). The company offered an optimistic 7 trips per day and the first passenger was carried on July 11, 1983. In addition to the beginning airport shuttle business, he also operated a self serve gas station with a mini mart and attached garage.
The first employee was Janis Murray, who answered phones in addition to waiting on customers with the other businesses. Janis is currently Vice President and General Manager of the Sheboygan operation and handles all Corporate personnel matters and most of the accounting and banking functions.
After about 5 months the company purchased an additional van, an extended length Ford van. Ford vans have been the backbone of the fleet ever since.
In 1985 Allan Goddard joined us as our Maintenance Manager. In addition to maintaining our fleet of 4 vans, Al started a Quick Lube in the attached garage. Al is still with us as our Maintenance Manager. Over the years, Al has kept our fleet safe and has allowed us to realize almost unheard of life for many of our vehicles. This was attested to by invitations from Navistar, the engine manufacturer, to bring one of our vehicles to their plant in Indianapolis plant to help them celebrate significant milestones with their company on two separate occasions.
In 1988, there was another shuttle service in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin that had gone bankrupt. We stepped in and tried to pick up the pieces. That service was soon absorbed into our company.
In 1989, we responded to an RFP from Milwaukee County to be one of two companies to provide airport shuttle service to hotels and businesses in Milwaukee County. We were awarded one of the two concessions to provide fixed route and fixed schedule services to the hotels in Milwaukee County. At that point, we closed the office in Oconomowoc and opened up an office in Milwaukee to handle both the Milwaukee County business as well as the service in Oconomowoc.
In 1992, we moved the Sheboygan operation to our own building and got out of the gasoline/mini mart and oil change business, allowing us to concentrate all our resources in the airport shuttle business.
In 1993, we agreed with the competing shuttle company in Milwaukee County that there was only enough business available to support one operator. A new RFP was issued, we both responded and we were selected to be the exclusive company providing airport shuttle service within Milwaukee County.
In 1998 we changed the name of the company to AIRPORT CONNECTION, much more descriptive of what we actually do as a business.
We have been affiliated with AGTA (Airport Ground Transportation Association) since 1988. Regular meetings with airport operators and major airport ground transportation providers from across the country have given us insight on trends in the industry resulting in better service to the traveling public. With the help of the airport and local government, we have been able to bring many of these improvements to Milwaukee and are now proud that we have what could be considered a “state of the art” airport ground transportation service for travelers.
In 2001, Michael Schneider joined our company as an assistant manager and immediately began taking on more responsibilities. Chuck Knowles joined the company as a driver in early 2002. Today, Mike is Vice President and General Manager of our Milwaukee operation in addition to being the technical backbone of the company. Chuck is our capable and very busy Operations Manager.
In 2002, we joined GroundNet, a consortium of high quality airport ground transportation operators serving major airports in the US, Canada and a few in Europe and the UK. In 2007, GroundNet evolved to a “brand” known as GO AIRPORT SHUTTLE and is the largest airport shuttle network in the world.
At present, we operate approximately 44 vans and 6 town cars from our two offices. We are fortunate to have a friendly staff or 170 or so full and part time employees who transport roughly 200,000 people per year to and from the airports we serve. We are proud to have countless regular customers who trust us to get them to and from the airport in all weather and traffic conditions.
